Michael
Gault remembers the desire to create and his appreciation of art beginning in
childhood. It wasn’t until after
serving in the Navy during the Vietnam era that he seriously began his pursuit .
In 1972, he was accepted by juried process into the renowned Kansas City
Art Institute. It wasn’t however until he was almost 23 and preparing for
his second year of studies at the Art Institute that he would walk into the
painting studio and choose that art as his life’s pursuit. He would complete his studies, graduate with a BFA in
Painting, and was accepted into the juried show “30 Miles of Art” at the
Nelson-Atkins Museum by 1976. Michael
began his studio career exhibiting in galleries in the Kansas City area and
taught regional workshops. He was
accepted, in 1978, by the University of Missouri at Kansas City, to continue his
education in painting. His thesis
in art “The Missouri Landscape Skies and Highways” was accepted in written
and studio presentations and he was awarded the Master of Arts Degree in 1980. Following
his college career, he entered into a teaching contract at Graceland College in
Lamoni, Ia., Michael started a graphics art business and continued to experiment
with various phases of fine art, and to paint and exhibit his work in the
limited market the mid-west offered. During
this period he was chosen by the Missouri State Historical Society as a National
Resource in an effort to bring attention to artists in the region.
His work was featured in state periodicals along with artist, Thomas Hart
Benton and writer, Mark Twain. A
one-man show in the state capital featured the Missouri Landscapes that Michael
was known for in the region. Michael
continued to paint, teach workshops and became an expert in computer graphics.
He began teaching design and computer classes at Missouri Western State
College in St. Joseph Missouri. The
studio remained his primary interest and he continued to show his work
regionally and he began to think about a return to the studio on a full-time
basis. A
vacation to Colorado ignited the desire Michael had as a child to live in the
Rocky Mountains, and within the year he had sold the graphics business,
purchased land in the Pikes Peak area and moved his family to Colorado.
Their custom home was designed to include a studio, gallery, office and
framing/storage area, and he immediately began painting full-time.
He became involved in local art groups and teaching workshops and
encouraging other individuals to pursue their artistic dreams.
In 2003 Michael entered into a contract with the University of Colorado
in Colorado Springs teaching studio and art history classes, which he continues
to do. Michael
continued to enter juried shows and has won numerous awards with Victor
Celebrates the Art, the Mountain Arts Festival, Rocky Mountain Plein Air
Painters, and the 2006 Mayor’s Award for the Estes Park Painting the Parks
Show and he was a featured artist in the 2008 RMPBS art auction.
In late 2007 Michael was approached by a design firm in Vail, CO to
supply 180 paintings featuring Colorado landscapes, as well as floral and
wildlife scenes. Michael agreed to the commission and delivered the work, all
original oil paintings. The work was accepted and is featured in The Arrabelle, a new
five-star resort built in Vail. He
has achieved local and national recognition.
His work has been featured in galleries in Santa Fe, Vail, Denver,
Colorado Springs, Aspen, and Steamboat Springs as well as throughout the
mid-west and in Paris, France. Collectors
throughout the United States as well as in France, Germany, Korea, Japan, and
the Netherlands own Gault landscapes, and he continues to paint. |
